چکیده

There has been relatively much work on practical reasoning in philosophy and artificial intelligence. Typically, such reasoning includes premises regarding means-end relations, but the semantics of such relations is not clear. In this paper, we provide a formal semantics for means-end relations, in particular for necessary and sufficient means-end relations. Our semantics includes a non-monotonic conditional operator, so that related practical reasoning is naturally defeasible. This semantics lays the groundwork for an evaluation of existing theories of practical reasoning as well as a semantic foundation for new work in practical reasoning. “They were in conversation without speaking. They didn’t need to speak. They just changed reality so that they had spoken.” Terry Pratchett, Reaper Man

Means-End Relations and a Measure of Efficacy

Propositional dynamic logic (PDL) provides a natural setting for semantics of means-end relations involving non-determinism, but such models do not include probabilistic features common to much practical reasoning involving means and ends. We alter the semantics for PDL by adding probabilities to the transition systems and interpreting dynamic formulas 〈α〉φ as fuzzy predicates about the reliabi...

Descriptive Semantics of the Nominal Hapax Legomenon of the Word Menhaj and the Pathology of its Three Translations (Meybodi, Makarem Shirazi and Ansarian)

Understanding the Quran depends upon appreciating meanings of the single words and concepts that are interconnected and interrelated like a chain. Nominal hapax legomenon in the Quran is a word that occurs only once in the holy Quran. Hence, such words need semantic scrutiny since they are difficult to understand. Accordingly, understanding hapax legomenons calls for examining and identifying t...

A Semantics for Functional Efficacy

Artifactual functions are related to means-end relations. Whatever else a functional ascription conveys, it expresses the expectation that artifacts of the appropriate type may be used to achieve the functional goal. We use our existing work on means-end semantics to make this relationship precise and present a preliminary formal account of artifactual functions. We adapt our work on probabilis...

Making Sense of the Abstraction Hierarchy

The paper discuss the abstraction hierarchy proposed by Rasmussen(1986) for design of human machine interfaces for supervisory control. The abstraction hierarchy represent the domain of human work by multiple levels of means-end and part-whole abstractions. It is argued in the paper that the abstraction hierarchy suffer from both methodological and conceptual problems. The problems are illustra...

Functorial semantics of topological theories

Following the categorical approach to universal algebra through algebraic theories, proposed by F.~W.~Lawvere in his PhD thesis, this paper aims at introducing a similar setting for general topology. The cornerstone of the new framework is the notion of emph{categorically-algebraic} (emph{catalg}) emph{topological theory}, whose models induce a category of topological structures. We introduce t...
